CSM Worldwide Was Right on in 2007, Will They Listen in 2008?

CSM Worldwide provides trusted automotive market forecasting services and strategic advisory solutions to the world's top automotive manufacturers, suppliers and financial organizations. CSM Worldwide covers the global automotive environment from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Sao Paulo, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Budapest, Delhi, Bangkok, Shanghai and Tokyo.

Last year, CSM predicted all the gloom and doom that we saw happen in 2008. As with all the people that were told they were nuts about the overall economy when they predicted the cotastrophy of 2008 housing markets, not many in charge listened to CSM last year either.

So are they listening this year? Here is what CSM had to say about the 2009 auto industry. The most striking of all their predictions was the number of automobiles that will be sold in the U.S. in the upcoming year. An average of around 17-18 million is considered a good year. Last year predictions were in the 15 million range, but this year is much worse. CSM predicts that total will fall all the way down to approximately 11.5 million units. Maybe the auto execs can live with out their gold plated bathroom fixtures in their gold plated private jets this year?

The report linked above asked questions about how the loss of one of the big 3 will not only effect the auto industry in Detroit, but the auto industry, and the parts makers as a whole.

“The bankruptcy of a major automaker won’t be just a Detroit problem or a Michigan problem,” says Craig Cather, CSM’s president and CEO, “The pain will quickly spread to the Southern states that have new foreign-owned auto plants, as well as Canada and Mexico, because there are no quick and easy ways to restructure companies or source components when the entire industry is in crisis.” And at barely two-thirds of a normal sales year, perhaps the often-abused term “crisis” is appropriate.

CSM and the Center for Automotive Research both assert that the interdependency of suppliers to automakers is a critical factor that is glossed over in newscasts and Congressional hearings. Something that I scream at the TV every time I see these guys talking about the "bailout", or bankruptcy for the auto makers. It seems that none of them really care all that much about the suppliers to me. CSM says the suppliers who contribute to Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac, etc. provide 58% of the parts to Asian “new domestics” and 37% of European “new domestics.” Those who provide parts for your Focus, Fusion, MKS, or MKZ also supply GM (70%,) Asians (65%), and 46% of the Europeans. Chrysler’s suppliers are similarly interconnected.

GM is bleeding cash, and can't really afford to wait much longer. As the biggest of the domestic automakers they are directly related to the suppliers' profitability. If they go down a lot of small businesses will go down with them.

Ford is considered to be in a decent position, but Chyrsler is going to die.

In fact, “the controlled wind-down of Chrysler is in everybody’s best interest,” according to Michael Robinet, CSM’s head of global vehicle forecasting. He is expecting that Cerberus Capital Management, Chrysler’s owner, will be able to sell the most valuable assets and brands while closing out the less valuable brands and facilities thereby mitigating, at least a bit, part of the auto industry’s huge overcapacity problem.

A survey by the website Kelly Blue Book says 32% of Americans would consider purchasing a car built in China, 28% a car built in India. No kidding? HArd to imagine it isn't higher.

Plug-in 2008 Electric Car Conference

Probably more than ever the Plug-in Conference will have the most notoriety it has ever had this year. Even though we are all getting a fantastic reprieve on gas prices, the cost of fuel weighs on our minds still, and for many the environmental concerns that arise with the burning of fossil fuels is becoming a bigger and bigger issue due to the global warming evidence.

The conference opened in San Jose, Calif., to showcase the latest technological advances, market research and policy initiatives shaping the future of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). With many displays and POS systems at the conference there is one place that has an array of video and conference information to look at. If you click here you can see video of exhibits about Luscious Garage at Plug-In 2008, The Good News about Plug-ins, with Mark Duvall, EPRI, Bad Boy Buggies, 4WD plug-ins, Enhanced Vehicle Acoustics, new sounds for quiet hybrids, ZAP! a tour of their EVs, Green Transporters a product tour, and A123 Hymotion all about converting to plug-in.

Speakers at the even were Steve Specker, President & CEO EPRI, Peter Schwartz, Global Business Network, Jonathon Lauckner, Vice President, GM, Nancy Gioia, Ford Motor Company, James Boyd, California Energy Commission, Dan Sperling, California Air Resources Board, Andy Grove, Former Chairman & CEO, Intel, Dr. Andy Frank, UC Davis, Jim Kelly, VP, Southern California Edison, and Mark Duvall, Program Manager, EPRI.

2009 Land Rover LR2 HSE Review

Remember the boxy, drive in the wild Africa LAnd Rover from the past? The newest Land Rover is nothing like that. It is updated for a sleeker look, and has become a stuffed with technology such as compatibility PDAs, GPS systems, and more.

The reviewer took a look at the 2009 Land Rover in a great place this week. Michigan. If you haven't seen it Michigan got more snow this week than I have seen in the last 5 years combined. Close to 2 feet in just a few days! So...if you wanted to test this vehicle out in extreme conditions you couldn't have picked a better place.

We have had a wonderful week to experience the LR2’s excellent treacherous-road manners here in mid-Michigan with three good snow storms back-to-back. I had a meeting in the city on Friday, right at the height of the second storm. About three inches of accumulated snow and slush with rutted, glazed paths characterized freeway conditions. Intermittent squalls reduced visibility to about 50 yards. Surprisingly few cars floundered in the ditches and surprisingly many trucks played out the skidding game. full review

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan S Review

I don't know about you, but I have always had a small place in my heart for VW automobiles. I don't know why. Maybe it is growing up playing "Slug-Bug" while riding around with my brothers and sisters in which we would punch eachother int he arm every time we saw a VW bug on the road, or they make great cars. Can't ever see a red bug on the road anymore with out flinching and thinking of the words "SLUGBUG RED!". Oh to be a youngest sibling...anyways

Crossovers are pretty lame cars for the most part. They are like eating veggies and good for you, but boring to drive most of the time when you would ratyher drive a sporty car and get a quick boost to your looks with Apidexin than take the hard road. According to this review, however the Tiguan S from Volkswagon is not one of those grandpa automobiles.

2009 Mercedes-Benz C300 Review

The Mercedes-Benz C300 is what you would call an entry level luxury/sport sedan. The base C300 starts around $31,000, but has quite a bit going for it with the base sedan. They certainly didn't take a Hydroxycut to the features for the entry level price tag. It comes with a V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, power sunroof, dual-zone climate control, 8-way power front seats, 8-speaker sound system with auxiliary input and Bluetooth capability, leather multi-function steering wheel with tilt and telescoping functions, automatic halogen headlight, and trip computer. Hardly a bare bones sedan.

A great review out there spiced it up a little before taking it out on the road. Got the price up to over $45,000 adding such perks as Steel Grey paint and black leather upholstery are extra cost items at $720 and $1,570 respectively. The iPod integration kit costs $375. TeleAid adds $650. The dramatic panoramic sunroof over the rear seat goes for $1,050.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse Review

Although GM is getting whipped in the Bailout talks, they still have one family vehicle that even vegas oddsmakers can get behind. The Chevrolet Traverse is a great family "station wagon".

Tried to find a good review from a "family" perspective and was able to do it. Mark Fullmer reviews quite a few vehicles, and he did it the right way for this kind of vehicle. Took his entire soccer family with him to show the true family value of this automobile. So if you want a true review of the Chevy Traverse this is the one you want.

Auto Bailout Talks Collapse, Again

Although it is clear that there is desire to prevent the auto companies from failing, talks are not going as positive as the auto makers hoped.

"Under normal economic conditions we would prefer that markets determine the ultimate fate of private firms," the White House statement said. "However, given the current weakened state of the U.S. economy, we will consider other options if necessary -- including use of the TARP program -- to prevent a collapse of troubled automakers."

"A precipitous collapse of this industry would have a severe impact on our economy, and it would be irresponsible to further weaken and destabilize our economy at this time," the statement said.

Basically, the disagreements in the senate have to do with differences between the wage cuts for auto workers. This led to the dismissal of help from the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and the $14 Billion relief plan that was being discussed for the auto makers. Democrats and Republicans relaxing in their modern furniture during the debates just can't come to an agreement.

"We're not going to get to the finish line. That's just the way it is. There's too much difference between the two sides," Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) announced after 10 p.m. yesterday, concluding a marathon negotiating session that ended in gridlock.

Top 10 Songs About Cars

First of all this isn't my list so send your complaints to this guy, Chuck Squatriglia.

Over the years there has been quite a bit of tunes written about cars. Some good, and some very bad. Favorites like Prince's Little Red Corvette, and the terrible like Pink Cadillac by Billy Ocean. I'm actually surpised there aren't more promotional products for these kinds of songs from auto dealers.

Anyways, I couldn't really think of 10 songs about cars off the top of my head I don't think. So I guess this guy's list is as good as any. Well...I suppose, you may not agree. I know I disagree with a few. They are terrible songs. Go to the link above for a bit of history on each song.

10. Chuck Berry - No Particular Place to Go
9. Rush - Red Barchetta
8. Sammy Hagar - I Can't Drive 55
7. The Beach Boys - 409
6. Ween - El Camino
5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Crosstown Traffic
4. Golden Earring - Radar Love
3. Drive-By Truckers
2. Sir Mix-A-Lot - My Hooptie
1. Prince - Little Red Corvette

Audi Snags 3 Auto Trophy Titles

Voters have given Audi a lot of action in the “Auto Trophy 2008” awards sponsored by motoring magazine Auto Zeitung. Three have Audi models were voted as the best of their classes at the “Auto Trophy 2008”. The poll saw the Audi A4, A6 and R8 pick up three of the year’s most sought-after awards. Audi also took first place in the image report on car brands for the fifth time in a row.

Audi is the cool car to have now I guess. Just like having Moroccan decor furniture in your home, you probably want to impress your friends with a new Audi according to popularity.

Audi won the mid-size category with 27.9% of the vote for the Audi A4. They won the full-size category with the Audi A6 getting 30.9% of the votes. LAst, but not least, the Audi R8 won the "supercar" category with 27.8% of the votes. A margin of over 10% in relation to the next highest vote getter.

In addition to these awards, for the fifth time in a row, they chose Audi as the best image for a brand at 38.6 percent. This category consisted of 49 other car brands. Audi is to automobiles as Moroccan decor is to furniture it appears. The best of the best.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Alternative to Oil

Compressed Natural Gas is a resource that America has a lot of. According to the CEO of Chesapeake Energy, a major CNG producer in the United States, there is enough domestic CNG to meet our needs for the next 100 years based on estimated demand.

Some of us even use it in our homes for cooking and heating. Others actually use it as an alternative to oil gasoline in their cars. the cost to fill a tank on a car with CNG is much less than it is to fill with traditional gasoline. At the same time the mileage you get from it is virtually the same. If you threw your luggage into a car in Chicago and drove to New York with identical amounts of CNG, or regular gas you would get the same mileage in cars that offer both alternatives.

Take a look at this Introduction to Automotive CNG for a bit more depth on the alternative fuel source.

As an example, Honda makes a natural gas Civic. I own a 2002 model year Civic and I get about 30 miles to the GGE in the city and about 36-40 miles to the GGE on the highway. This is exactly the same as the gasoline version of the car gets.

2008 GMC Yukon Reviews

The 2008 gmc yukon is one of the more wanted luxury SUVs on the market these days. It is no surprise that those who are in love with it want to find out as much as possible when it comes to the vehicle. The more 2008 gmc yukon reviews they can get the better so I have tried to gather a good place with a comprehensive review list for the 2008 Yukon.

The 2008 gmc yukon is universally ranked very high, but it doesn't hurt to get some really in depth gmc yukon reviews to give you a better taste of what to expect when you are off to test drive one of them. Plenty of pictures provided for it as well which is what I usually love when I look at reviews. Every aspect of the car is covered by professional reviewers who have actually gotten behind the wheel. What more could you ask for?

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Review

The most popular mid-sized car is the Toyata Camry. The hybid is vying for popularity of the same type. The Camry hybrid has been on the market since 2007.

Reveiws are coming in for the 2009 Camry Hybrid and the results are very positive. not only does the car have a nice look, it is what people are looking for in this poor economy. Although many of us have seen gas prices drop dramatically the past few weeks, we are all thinking fuel efficiency, or at least we should be going into the future. No better way if you are in the market for a new car than to look for something that may be able to get you 10-20 MPG more than what your guzzler is doing for you now.

Just one tank of gas probably saves you enough for those new tape drives you are looking to get. People may talk about cost vs. reward for these cars, but believe me...most people see their cash flow improvement in the short-term than they see it with the price of a car.

A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and commendable fuel economy is the standard engine in all except the hybrid, which has a modified version of that unit allied with an electric motor in Toyota's full-hybrid Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The 187 maximum system horsepower slots between the standard four and the 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 optional for the LE, SE, and XLE.

The Hybrid is equipped to the same level as the XLE, with the addition of the keyless "Smart Entry and Smart Start" system, as used in upscale cousins over at Lexus. It's not quite that luxurious, but it is a pleasant upper-middle class sedan with all of the virtues of a current-generation Camry and better fuel economy and cruising range. It does have some drawbacks - the battery pack under the trunk floor means a small loss of trunk space - which shouldn't be a major problem as that trunk is still more than adequate. And the battery pack also precludes a real trunk pass-though. But I suspect that anyone who really needs a huge trunk and cargo capacity is not looking at a sedan. Hello Toyota Highlander (also available in hybrid form) or RAV4. Full review

2009 Jetta TDI Vehicles Make Fuel Efficiency Government Listing

OF all the vehicles that made the EPA and Energy Departments' list of the most fuel efficient vehicles, the 2 Volkswagons that made the list are the only clean diesel fuel vehicles. The rest are hybrids, which makes the Jetta an interesting find. A slim10 look, and great fuel efficiency make a car you can't go wrong with.

"Many of the vehicles on this list are hybrids, and we're proud to have the only clean diesel cars to receive top honors in such an import list, particularly," said Mark Barnes, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "At a time when fuel economy is top of mind for consumers we are proud of our Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen TDI for offering a true no compromise deal for consumers -- comfort, economy and performance."

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Jetta TDI at an economical 29 mpg City and 40 mpg Highway. Testing done in real world conditions showed a bit better estimates as well. Leading third-party certifier, AMCI, has tested the Jetta TDI and found it performed 24 percent better in real world conditions, achieving 38 mpg in the City and 44 mpg on the Highway.

Alt Car Expo 2008: Prometheus Solar Motorcycle

A SOLAR motorcycle? This can't be a good thing can it? Well...I mean this solely on a performance issue. Not as in it is bad to try it.

Jim Corning decided to "modify" his wife's seldom used Ninja 250. The result is the still unnamed electric motorcycle. Can't think of much in recent memory where anyone has tried to play around with motorcycles in the attempt to increase gas mileage, or make them electric. We are seeing it here though and it is tough to describe what it is all about.

Fortunately, there is video available about the bike. Take a look at their presentation and discussion from the ALT Car Expo below:

Alt Car Expo 2008: Chevy Volt

Everyone is looking for better fuel efficiency. Everyone. We are all askign our American automakers to jump into the ring and get some made so that we can start competing on the global scale with more fuel efficient cars.

At the 2008 Alt Car Expo, Chevy showed up with the Chevy VOLT. According to articles I've read the electrice plug-in turned a few heads not only for the kind of vehicle it is, but also because it has a Beautifeel look.

Below is a video from the Expo about the vehicle. If you want to read more about the Chevy Volt take a look at the Chevy Electric website to have a look at their line and this car specifically.

Top 5 Vans for 2009

I wouldn't be surprised if some of you were like i used to be and actually use a van to haul stuff rather than a truck. Heck even a mini-van isn't a bad option considering that you can usually get one for dirt cheap compared to a nice pick up. Of course I'm not going to list these vans here suggesting that you go out and buy one for the purpose of hauling heavy stuff. Just putting the idea in your mind that vans are a good way to lug stuff around as an option :).

These vans are brand new of course so we don't really want to be getting them all dirty right away now do we? About the only thing we will be hauling in these are our families and all the baby clothes, toys, and baby supplies we need for EVERYWHERE we go.

So NADAguide.com put out their ratings for the Top 5 vans for 2009 this week. Take a look.

10 Biggest Auto Sales Losers

Now...most of these vehicles are SUVs with poor gas mileage. That right there is a big clue as to why they are losing out in the market right now. Although this is the case the costs of them are getting so low as they are blinking brightly on the digital signage outside dealerships, that many are trying to justify the purchase as that they are so cheap the cost of gasoline is offset.

Certainly this is "logical" to deduce, but in reality are you really getting that good a deal in the long run? First of all the sticker price being dropped down means that the blue book of the vehicle is worth a lot less now anyways so it isn't like you are getting a good investment out of it. Used cars don't typically go up in value like say a house does when you buy it in this market. Besides...I am not going to try and call you dumb, but do you honestly believe that gas prices are going to go down over the life of your vehicle, or that MPG standards are going to stay the same? I didn't think you did. So...these "deals" aren't technically deals at all, and frankly you are just adding to the problem by buying them.

Anyways,,,there might be a couple "good" deals in this list, but you'll have to judge for yourself. Take a look at the 10 Biggest Auto Sales Losers out there right now.

84.09 MPG for a van? Citroen Nemo Pulls off record

Looking for a way to save some extra money for your nextBarbados villa rentals? Would be nice to have this van that logs in at 84 MPG wouldn't it?

Now...I don't know how this qualifies as a "van" really. It looks like a tiny little girly car, but they call it a "van" in Europe so it must be true.

October 13, 2008: 84.09mpg is the amazing fuel consumption returned by a Citroën Nemo 1.4HDi van in the independent ALD Automotive/Total Excellium MPG Marathon 2008 organised by Fleet World magazine. With this outstanding figure the Citroën Nemo takes over the mantle as the UK’s most fuel-efficient van from the Citroën C2 Enterprise, which has held the title since 2006. The 84.09mpg figure was achieved despite the van carrying half its gross payload, to simulate real-world usage scenarios.

Pretty amazing feat considering that the van was even loaded to the gills with cargo. 1/2 the total amount allowed was carried and it still pulled it off? Nothing to scoff at I guess. Even more amazing? The price. At 8,295 Euros it converts to a little over $11,000.

Late Payments on Auto Loans Rising, Gas Prices Dropping

It's not just the home mortgages that are taking a toll in this economy. Auto loans are having their share of troubles as well. Borrowers have pushed the total of late payments up to over $25 Billion recently according to figures released by Experian Automotive, a part of Experian, at the Automotive Finance Summit by the hotels in las vegas this week.

Experian Automotive presented a comprehensive overview of automotive lending trends based on a quarterly analysis of the market from the second quarter of 2006 through the second quarter of 2008. The analysis found that loans 30 days past due were up 9 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2008, while loans 60 days past due were up 11 percent. Currently, 2.48 percent of all automotive loans are 30 days past due, compared with 2.28 percent in the second quarter of 2007. Automotive loans 60 days past due rose to 0.75 percent from 0.67 percent. Although it may not seem like a ton to the average person this is a significant increase over this term. Just shows that the economy is taking its toll on even more industries.

On a happier note, gas prices have dropped significantly over the last week. While we were probably paying $3.50-4.00 a gallon a week ago, many of us are seeing prices at the pump around $3 now, and I have even gotten gas for as little as $2.90 a gallon in the last few days.

Theory suggests that the decline comes as hurricane season winds down and oil prices drop because demand is likely to weaken as the economy slows. Hey...at least getting to work and back isn't going to be so costly this month. Great time to build up your cash reserve, or pay off some debt because this isn't going to be this friendly for a long time. I guess if you don't like to think a head, then you have more money to blow on stuff you want instead of using a credit card for it.

Auto Repair Help and Locators Online

For those of us that aren't exactly great mechanic finding an auto repair shop just got a bit easier. Besides looking at a directory to find a repair shop, you can even compare car repair prices online now. A very helpful tool so that you know you are getting a fair deal.

The listings are helpful for virtually anywhere as well. Take for example you can find
San Francisco car repair with that example and see shops that will work on your car. You can even search all the way down to the make and model to find repair information. Take a look at this example for
Ford Taurus repair.

Not only is there information for repair shops online, but these sites actually allow you to discuss repair issues with other owners of your specific make and model. So if you actually are a decent mechanic, but need a tip on something you are trying to repair, you can get into a discussion about parts, the best procedure for making the repair, , or just figure out if you have what it takes to do it yourself. A very good site for automobile owners of any site is RepairPal.com. definitely going ot help you with car repair, and maintenance problems.

Hydrogen Powered Turbine Test Successful

Turbine Truck Engines, Inc., is reporting that the company has successfully operated its full scale, fifth generation prototype engine utilizing compressed hydrogen as the fuel source. Testing produced zero emissions and required absolutely no modification to switch the Detonation Cycle Gas Turbine Engine from propane to hydrogen. The betting line for success for those with jobs in Las Vegas has just tightened up a bit.

Michael Rouse, CEO of Turbine Truck Engines, said: “This is another major milestone for TTE. The company is moving forward in a significant way that is catching the eyes of serious investors. Clean air technology of this magnitude is something the world urgently needs.”

Mark Johnson, President of HGenerators, the hydrogen gas-from-water electrolysis generator company added, “One hundred percent renewable hydrogen gas-from-water technology would literally enable anyone to make their own fuel and power their Turbine Truck Engine using water as the basic ingredient. The test results prove that turbine engine technology, utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source, has the least environmental impact due to zero emissions resulting in a truly green application."

Take a look at the video demonstration that they have released:

Energy Bill Could Accelerate Growth of NGV Fueling Infrastructure

One of the issues of this presidential election year is certainly that of fuel. Not just alternative fuels, but that of things like more drilling. A new House Energy Bill introduced is expected to expand natural gas fueling infrastructure. Also, saying that they are going to require at least one natural gas, and one other alternative fuels pump at retail gas stations.

The energy bill introduced today by the Democratic House Leadership -- the ‘‘Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act’’ – could play a major role in expanding the natural gas fueling infrastructure in the U.S., according to NGVAmerica. Specifically, the bill would: (1) extend and expand the existing income tax credit for installing natural gas fueling stations (including doubling the income tax credit for natural gas home fueling appliances); (2) create Energy Security Bonds for grants and low-interest loans to place natural gas refueling property at retail motor fuel stations; and (3) mandate that, by 2018, each retail fueling station owned by a major integrated oil company shall have at least one natural gas or other alternative fuel pump (and necessary infrastructure and storage facilities).

All of these provisions were originally part of the New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act , introduced in July by Reps. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and Dan Boren (D-OK). “The NGV industry is deeply indebted to Reps. Emanuel and Boren for their leadership in supporting the growth of natural gas vehicles in America,” said NGVAmerica President Richard Kolodziej. “The industry is in discussions with auto manufacturers to produce and sell more NGVs here. A rapidly growing natural gas fueling infrastructure will facilitate those decisions.”

So...does this bill actually do anything for you? Will there be small business for sale in the fueling sector because they don't want to deal with the regulations? All in all I don't see a huge impact here for anyone. I am always of the opinion that the market dictates what businesses need to do. Since Japan and other countries are killing us in alternative fuel vehicles, you have to believe that eventually our automakers will get on board and build the ones that we demand as well. At this point here is little going on that gives you hope for our auto industry. Will a bill like this help push them that way? You would think that to be the case, but our automakers haven't done anything to keep themselves from losing money the last decade so what makes us think that they will in this one?

2008 BMW 328i Hardtop Convertible Review

Never going to miss a BMW review. Like little girls play with their dream dollhouses, the little boys dream of cars like the BMW. In this case it is the 2008 BMW 328i Hardtop Convertible Review.

The reviewer in this case takes us along for the ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here are a couple quotes and this is a link to the full review.

We managed a solid 28-mpg on premium fuel averaging 75 to 80-mph with the top up and AC on low.

The Steptronic automatic transmission accounts for $1,325 and the navigation system costs $2,100. The other big ticket is the Premium Package which includes the garage door opener, digital compass mirror, automatically dimming mirrors, lumbar support and BMW Assist with Bluetooth accommodation for $2,750. The $1,300 Sport Package includes 18-inch wheels shod with performance tires (225/40R18 Bridgestone Potenza), sport seats and a sport suspension.

Hella'sNew Generation of the Auxiliary-Spotlight Series "Luminator" with Xenon Light

Automechanika 2008 is a show that highlights (no pun intended) as an international meeting point for the automobile industry. This is where they show off automotive parts, components and systems, electronics, supply and maintenance, right up to environmental and recycling concepts will be featured. Pretty interesting show actually as it will give a look into all the new toys you can add to your vehicle, and the kinds of new standards for features on automobiles. I wouldn't even be surprised if you could find treadmills as an add on to a car while you are in a traffic jam...lol

Hella (Always think of Cartman from South Park when I hear it now) has always been a leader in the spotlight component for vehicles and plan to give a look at their new "Luminator" series with Xenon light this year. Their new series is no different. Take a look at the in depth preview of the new improvements of the Luminator series here.

New Porsche 911 Unveiled Today in New York

Today at the MOTOREXPO at the World Financial Center in New York the new edition of the Porsche 911 will be unveiled. The 911 is being touted as a sports car that has better fuel efficiency and better performance. Pretty big step I must say when you can lower fiel need and still increase performance.

Other cars that will make you scramble for an online auto insurance quote to be able to afford the coverage of a sports car will be revealed by Porsche as well at the MOTOREXPO. In addition to the new 911, Porsche Cars North America's comprehensive exhibit at MOTOREXPO, which runs September 15-19 at the World Financial Center in lower Manhattan, will highlight two versions of the company's mid-engine sports cars, a Cayman and Boxster RS60, the high-performance Cayenne GTS and the American Le Mans champion Penske Porsche RS Spyder race car.

Alternative Fueling Station Locator

While out on the road for business and handing out your personalized pens for a bit of marketing activity, you may wonder where you can find an alternative fueling station in the area. The U.S. Department of Energy has recently set up a page that gives the locations of all the stations in the United States as well as driving directions to them. You can also find a printable version of the list to take with you if you happen to be on a cross country road trip.

The following alternative fuels are included in the mapping application: compressed natural gas (CNG), E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline), propane/liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), biodiesel, electricity, hydrogen, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Find the maps here.

Best Value SUVs and Crossovers

If you are even considering an SUV with gas prices right now you may as well at least do a little research to find something that gets more than 11 MPG. I know an SUV is needed at times to chug a family around, or a place to store 4 golf bags when you sneak out of the house on the weekends so let's take a looks at some of the better values out there.

Stas for these vehicles are available at Cars.com. Not only do they give you the standard MPG info, but they are also compared based upon lifetime fuel cost based on 15,000 miles driven per year. #1 is the Jeep Patriot.

2009 Hyundai Genesis Preview

I like to give a wide variety of auto reviews here to give people an idea of just the amount of different options they have. It seems as if many automakers aren't as good at adertising these vehicles as you would think they would be considering U.S. automakers pretty much spend more money advertising than alternative fuel efficient research *cough*. Hey...at least their offices are probably comfortable with a nice set of Air O Swiss humidifiers.

The 2009 Hyundai Genesis is just one of those cars that you probably haven't though much about, or maybe never even heard of. So...I included this video preview of it to take a quick look. Air O Swiss humidifiers

Japanese Lead Eco-Car Race

While presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama speak of the need for less reliance on foreign fuel, and for some odd reason even talking of off shore drilling that won't even help us for another 20 years, the Japanese automakers are producing cars that rely on alternative fuel already. The Detroit automakers are on the other hand acting as if someone needs to hit them on the head with a paella pan to wake up as they are trailing by miles in the development and manufacturing of Eco-friendly alternative fuel vehicles in the world market.

According to Newsweek, Japanese automakers are now going to the next level, entering the green-car mass market, in many cases years before their competitors.

Nissan plans to introduce an electric vehicle to the United States and Japan by 2010, with a global rollout in 2012. Toyota is road-testing a plug-in hybrid and plans to launch it in 2009. Honda is preparing for the launch of a new car highly anticipated for its innovative green technologies, including its state-of-the-art battery. Mazda will offer the world's first hydrogen-gasoline hybrid in Japan by next March. "Globally, Japanese companies are definitely at the top right now, and I expect them to remain No. 1 in the future," says Mike Omotoso, an auto analyst for J.D. Power and Associates. "It's definitely having a positive impact on the Japanese economy."

Ford Focus Sales up 23%

Although Ford sales figures look like they have been taking the best diet pills available this year, on car is still increasing in sales month to month. That is the Ford Focus.

“The Focus and Escape offer the features and fuel economy today’s consumers want,” Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president for sales and marketing, said in a statement.

Ford does not see the market for new vehicles rebounding anytime soon.

“We expect the second half of 2008 will be more challenging than the first half,” Farley said, “as weak economic conditions and the consumer credit crunch continues.”

Honda Insight, the New Hybrid with the Old Name

Honda’s original Insight hybrid was introduced in 1999 but it was discontinued in 2006 after sluggish sales totaling a cumulative 17,000 worldwide. With the success of the Toyota Prius, Honda is looking to get back into the hybrid market after many hours of restful contemplation by the light of tea light candles

Tokyo-based Honda, Japan’s No. 2 automaker, will show a “concept model” of the Insight at the Paris Motor Show next month, Honda said in a statement Thursday.

It will be a five-door hatchback compact, whose design is based on the sleek FCX Clarity, Honda’s fuel cell vehicle, according to Honda.

“The name Insight was chosen to denote Honda’s ’insight’ into a new era in which hybrid vehicles come within reach of most car buyers,” the company said.

L.A. Auto Show: BMW to Show Alternative Fuel Cars

While many of you will be leaving the comforts of your leather home theater seating to visit the show I thought I would post some highlights from a recent interview of Ian Robertson, New Chairman and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motorcars and member of the BMW AG board of management in charge of sales and marketing. In which he discusses a bit about what is in store for the LA Auto Show in regards to BMW.

AIADA: Last year BMW introduced its hydrogen vehicle. What are other fuel options are being explored?

IR: If you look at all the fuel alternatives that are available, there are many under development that have not actually seen the light of day yet. I hear people say ‘Is it going to be a hybrid, is it going to be an all electric car, is it going to be one that runs on some other fuel?’ The answer is, this industry has been around for over 100 years and we are extremely good at developing technologies due to circumstances. Over the next two years we will see lots of technologies starting to appear.

AIADA: How is BMW proceeding with the various options?

IR: As a technological leader, BMW has a number of ideas but we are not putting all our focus on one technology. We have multiple ideas that are coming through. Some of them will be more successful than others, I am sure.

AIADA: When will this new technology be shown? At the Paris Auto Show?

IR: You will have to wait to see what we show in Paris, but one thing is for certain: you will see in LA some alternative fuel vehicles that will come to market.

AIADA: Thanks Ian, see you in LA. Full interview

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Review

Now here's a car that we can all enjoy. The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. The makers of this one have gone for a look, sound, and feel of excitement. According to the review on AC the makers are sating that everyone who sees, rides, and drives the Chevy ZR1 will feel "shock and awe". Not sure using a term like that during wartime is the best way to market it, but I digress :P.

The reviewers sure felt the experience as one they won't forget. They will dote on this car like you haven't seen in recent reviews and i can't blame them. With a car like this you should be contacting moving companies and heading to a "cooler" neighborhood to show off to the "cool" kids.

Just read about the engine:

the new ZR1 is powered by a breakthrough engine. The noise generator living beneath the picture-frame hood pumps out a hearty 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque thanks, in part, to the Eaton supercharger that spins up to 15,000 rpm, singing just the right amount of blower whine as it works. This 6.2-liter small-block pulls like a Peterbilt at low rpm, provides sufficient oomph to visit the dark side of the 200-mph barrier (205 mph, actually), and is smart enough to give the blower a break while cruising to save fuel. Throttling back to 60 mph in sixth gear, we registered 30 mpg on the dash's instantaneous-mileage display. Loafing along in conservation mode, the new mighty mouse makes no more ruckus than the standard Corvette's 430-hp V-8.

Auto Suppliers Urge Congress to Support Move to Greater Fuel Efficiency

The biggest manufacturing sector in the United States, motor vehicle parts supliers, is urging Congress to pass legislation that would assist the industry's transition to more fuel efficient technologies. The stress giving the population acne over gas prices is starting to finally get suppliers to urge for more help. They know the profirts are there. Just do it already.

The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), a trade association representing motor vehicle parts suppliers, is asking congress to provide funding that would help automakers and parts suppliers retool their facilities, purchase new equipment, and expand or build new facilities to meet the demand for more fuel efficient vehicles. They are also seeking for funding for advanced battery technology to help speed the development of plug-in hybrids and pure plug-in vehicles.

"The entire industry is transitioning to more efficient vehicles and more fuel-saving technologies," said MEMA President and CEO Bob McKenna. "We hope that when Congress returns next month, they will encourage this transition by providing the necessary funding to assist the hundreds of companies, big and small, that are working to get this job done."

2008 British Motor Show: Lotus Evora

Lotus has always produced high performance, and highly pleasing to the eye vehicles. Built to race, they are some of the coolest cars around The first all-new Lotus since Elise made its debut in 1995, the Evora enters the sports car market as currently the world's only mid-engined 2+2.

At the British Motor Show this year they have revealed the Lotus Evora for the first time. A vehicle that would be fit for a race track, and subsequently employment screening to the driver so he doesn't kill himself behind the wheel.

Quite a video about the Lotus Evora has been released. It is over 20 minutes long so this isn't a quick look, but in fact very in depth. Take a look:

2008 Sedans That Get 30+ MPG Combined City/Highway

While the U.S. has pretty loose miles per gallon requirements for automobiles compared to other countries, it still doesn't stop us from wanting to find cars that don't suck dry our bank accounts at the gas pump, or seeking the best acne treatments due to gas prices stress. In our case 30+ MPG is actually considered good, although it is poor compared to many other places.

Anyways, if you are looking for some "fuel efficiency" here is a list of the 2008 sedans with the best MPG stats. Surely these cars are going to save us millions in gas expenditures :rolls eyes:.

2008 Cadillac CTS V6 DI Review

The 2008 Cadillac CTS V6 DI is a luxury Performance Sedan, and the review that I pull for it is from a guy that openly says he hates Caddys. A guy that thinks it is your "Grandfather's Car" while he is an elitist snow (he says this) that probably spends his time with his fitness equipment and calling himself things like "The Trav".

I really liked the sound this car made when you punched it, even though the sound was really the only effect of punching it. Sort of sounded like the big V8 in the Caprice Station Wagon we had when I was a wee tike. Big full barrelled sound. America, pre gas crisis. The sound of freedom. This car had that sound. Made me nostalgic. read more

Hybrids Dominate Auto Lease Searches

Hybrid vehicles are becoming more widely available in the used market now since there have been a few years of production now. Consumers are struggling to pay for their fuel so it is no surprise that searches for hybrid automobiles are on the rise. The Toyota Prius is said to be up in searches over 500% over the last year.

While I'm more worried about my air conditioning compressor at the moment, it doesn't hurt to see just what the hybrid market is doing as well.

Automobile Consumer Services, Inc. (ACS), the leader in online direct-to-consumer auto leasing, released a list of the top 10 most requested vehicles from its popular auto leasing website. Information was collected during the first half of 2008 from more than three million lease quote requests. "We have seen a huge increase in requests for hybrid models with the Toyota Prius up over 500% from the last half of 2007," says Tarry Shebesta, President of ACS and a certified lease consultant. "And, for the first time, used hybrid demand is increasing because of the waiting list for many of the new models." read more

2009 BMW 7 Series Preview

Oh yeah...this car is going to kick literal ass. Literal ass? Who knows, but this car is awesome. In September, the Paris auto show will host BMW for the world premiere of the new 7 Series. Last week, the media were invited to Bavaria for the first look at the fifth generation of BMW’s flagship.

People that drive these cars probably don't even need to care about using acne scars cream because just being in it makes you look like a pimp.

Here's an article talking about it all, with interviews and a bunch of pic s for you to gander at. Below is the promo video that was released recently.

2008 Volvo C70 T5 Convertible Review

The 2008 Volvo C70 T5 Convertible is a nice looking ride. A far cry from the old boxes that used to carry the Volvo name. This ride makes you want to make sure you have yourself in skinny condition from diet pills when you have the top down so the ladies can see your tight abs.

The Volvo C70 convertible is a beautiful package, if pricey. Here’s a car that begs to be driven like a sports car. It’s heavy for a sports car and the power-to-weight ratio doesn’t work, but everything else does – the feel, the handling and the ambience. Full review

Most Hybrids Not The Solution to High Gas Prices: NADA Study Suggests

While trying to take the Phentermine approach to gas prices by trimming the amount of fuel consumers use in their cars in hybrids may be the thing most assume is the way to go, a NADA Study may show that is not the case at all. It just depends on what kind of driver you are.

Using current gas prices for ten major metropolitan areas, the company studied the number of miles needed to recoup the extra cost of buying a hybrid car over its gasoline-only counterpart. "We recognize that every driver's situation is different and that some people will achieve a return on the extra investment of a hybrid car much faster than others," said Tara Baukus Mello, senior writer and lead market analyst for NADAguides.com.

"Drivers near major cities often have a wide range of commute distances, which means that the break-even point can be dramatically different from one person to the next," cautioned Baukus Mello. "For example, if a Houston-area commuter travels 12 miles one way to work, driving 10,000 total miles annually, while a Los Angeles-area commuter travels 25 miles one way, driving 15,000 total miles annually, the Los Angeles commuter recoups his investment almost 80 percent faster."

Mitsubishi Lancer Recognized for Highest Owner Satisfaction In Compact Category

Does anyone look at surveys for owner satisfaction? I do for some reason. I just think that if owners love their cars, there is a good chance that it is a pretty darn good vehicle and worth taking a look at. It leaves an impression on my memory when I hear people that actually own a car love it.

The Misubishi Lancer is being recognized as the compact car with the highest owner satisfaction of 2008.

"Vehicles like the Mitsubishi Lancer that are all new received top rankings in their respective categories," said AutoPacific President George Peterson. "These new-for-2008 vehicles were strongly rated by their owners showing that the industry continues to improve as new vehicles are added to the hotly contested American car and light truck markets."

2008 Saab 9-X BioHybrid Wins U.S. Concept Car Award

I'm not sure I can describe this as beautifully as they have here, but this car deserves a bit of publicity at least. Designed for youthful drivers, the 2008 Saab 9-X BioHybrid has the looks and feel that anyone who is going to fall in love with their cars would want. The vehicle is designed to give the drive connectivity to its vehicle, offering just about everything you can imgaine except theater seating.

The 9-X BioHybrid also demonstrates the potential for ultra-efficient power from a 200 hp (147 kW), 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine backed by GM’s next-generation hybrid system. Projected combined cycle CO2 emissions of just 105 g/km on E85 fuel are testimony to the promise of this package.

“The Saab 9-X BioHybrid blends organic form with ecologically sound propulsion for both aesthetic and environmental appeal”, said jury panel member Arv Voss of Auto Impressions. Added Bob Kroupa of the Automotive Writers Group: “Saab takes center stage with a new design approach for a compact vehicle. With the BioHybrid turbo engine included, we have a winner”.

2008 Alternative Fuels and Vehicles Conference

You can't get away from gas prices right now so interest in the Alternative Fuels and Vehicles Conference in LAs Vegas is drawing a bit more attention than it probably has in previous years. Between sessions of checking out the women in their sexy swimwear at the pool some people actually took the time to collect videos of the many presentations that were available on the various panels.

If you go to the Auto Channel page for the Conference and scroll down to the bottom of the article you will find a list of 30+ videos from the conference. Various new technologies are discussed as well as the state of alternative fuels by a few speakers.

Automakers Scramble to Produce Hybrids, Alternative Fuel Vehicles

With gasoline hovering north of $4 a gallon and public demand shifting rapidly, automakers are scrambling to get more energy efficient vehicles, alternative fuel vehicles, and hybrids on the market. Wow...way to look a head. Could have done this 5 years ago.

On June 16 Toyota announced two hybrids in the coming year, a Lexus (to debut in January), as well as the third-generation Toyota Prius, which will be out sometime in 2009.

Toyota is at working on lighter, more powerful lithium ion batteries that will first be used in the company's plug-in hybrid, which has a production date of 2010. Still...the lack of hydrogen fueling availability is a concern spurring thoughts that people will be wearing out their Ecco shoes faster than their tires if they don't have fuel available.

General Motors remains confident that their long-discussed, all-electric, Chevrolet Volt will be in showrooms in 2010 as well, with the capability to run 40 miles on battery-power alone. The company has yet to name a supplier for the Volt's battery.

TomTom Brings Tele Atlas to 20 Million customers

TomTom is the fastest growing GPS system out there and they continue to impress.

One of the biggest customer complaints about GPS accuracy. Maps that are out of sync with reality, and get more so every day due to the continuously changing road network. TomTom developed a system called MapShare that is helping to solve the issue. TomTom analyzed the most common map frustrations and enabled drivers to easily and instantly correct map errors directly on their portable navigation device.

Now with their Tele Atlas partnership they are able to share up to date data with their customers better than ever before.

"As promised, the transfer of this feedback marks the first tangible deliverable following TomTom's acquisition of Tele Atlas," said Harold Goddijn, CEO of the new combined entity. "It will ensure that everybody can benefit from this community feedback, and the amount we have received is staggering. On average, by the end of 2008, if you drive anywhere for one hour with a Tele Atlas map enhanced by Map Share feedback, your route will be influenced by more than 20 corrections."

"It is not just the quantity, but the quality of the Map Share feedback that is impressive," said Bill Henry, CEO of Tele Atlas. "Validating and integrating large amounts of data is what we've been experts at for 25 years. But these are not just any corrections, these are issues actual customers cared about enough to report. Tele Atlas has always been at the forefront in terms of industry innovations. For example, we invented and deploy the largest fleet of high-tech map-detection vehicles in the world. Now we will be the first company to use real-time input from the world's largest navigation community to deliver what we believe will be the best and freshest maps and dynamic content products to all our partners. I am particularly happy that we'll be able to get the first results in the hands of our partners this year already."

Choosing the Right Car for a Teen Driver

The last thing you probably want to do is think about getting your son or daughter their first car right now with the ridiculous prices of gasoline. I was actually happy to get gas for $4.09 a gallon today and filled it up with only a 1.4 of a tank gone. Still cost me about $25...ugh.

So they have graduated from hounding you about getting a new video card for their computer so they can play World of Warcraft all day and are ready to get a car. What should you be looking for in terms of a vehicle that your teen will not only be safe in, but something that isn't going to cost you an arm and a leg to maintian, and of course get some decent fuel efficiency.

AAA has produced a brochure you can check out with some helpful tips to decide just what your teen driver needs to have.

2008 Jaguar XKR Coupe Review

Jaguars are the pimp mobiles in my opinion. I absolutely love the look of the classy Jaguar series vehicles. The 2008 Jaguar XKR is no different. Just looka t this bad boy. This is the car you want to be seen in driving to your Los Angeles jobs and trying to look like a Hollywood celebrity.

2008 Jaguar XKR Coupe

Building on the performance and looks of the regular XK by supercharging the 4.2-liter AJ-V8 engine and adding subtle musculature to the bodywork, the XKR is a fine example of a Grand Touring car, an oft-misunderstood term. What does the abbreviation "GT" mean? Not (shudder) the once all-too-common econobox with a spoiler on the trunk and "GT" on the sides. The real meaning is: a car that combines the performance of a true sports car with the comfort, for two people, of a luxury sedan, enabling it to be driven effortlessly for long distances at high average speeds. Because of this, it will be heavier than a pure sports car, with some consequent loss of ability near the limits. But in the real world of speed limits and traffic, that loss is moot. Divergent evolution since the end of World War II has ensured that a contemporary road-legal GT like the XKR is a long way from being a modern race car. Full Review

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan Review

Volkswagon has finally decided to jump into the mid-sized SUV ring with the Volkswagon Tiguan for 2009. A bunch of test-drivers were invited out to Colorado to take a look at the Tiguan, and it seems they are impressed. Comfortable driving and a quiet ride much like a progesterone cream when stresss levels are high.

First impressions of the Tiguan’s driving dynamics as we eased out of town into the mountains were very good. Tiguan is exceptionally quiet inside. Obviously great care was taken to create its auditory ambiance. I’m wondering if the same acoustic attenuation technology used in the GTI is used here. The engine sounds that make it through the insulation into the cockpit are more than just pleasant, they virtually sing at higher rpms. full review

2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid FWD Review

The 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid 4-Wheel Drive. Now that is quite a mouthful. Is that sentence and oxymoron? SUV, Hybrid, and 4-wheel drive all in one car? Apparently not. With gas guzzling SUVs becoming less of an option for most, mid-size SUV Mariner, the more refined hybrid twin of the Ford Escape, has received its fare share of recognition from Green supporters, from the Green Car Journal to the U.S. Environmental Projection Agency and probably your savings accounts.

Mariner is part of the Ford Motor Company and was formed in the 1930s to be an upscale brand alongside Lincoln. Updates for the 2008 model mainly include styling. It stands out from the Escape with a more luxurious or prominent front grille.

The reviewer drove a 2008 Mariner Hybrid with a 153-horsepower 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with a 94-horsepower electric motor powertrain and FWD (2WD). It came with the Hybrid Premium Package, which included power heated mirrors, heated front seats, a digital navigation system, roof rack with cross bars, leather seating, and a retractable cargo cover ($3,395). It also had Sirius satellite radio ($995) and an AC 100V power outlet ($180). Total vehicle price came to $31,000.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review

Are people still buying the hell out of these things? Sure are. This is basically the best selling line of SUVs for like, forever. Not sure you need much of a travel guide when you go off with an SUV since gas probably costs more than your entire trip combined at this point, but if you want to go really fast in an SUV, then the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is your vehicle.

Jeep stuck a snarling 6.1-liter V8 HEMI engine under the hood, capable of delivering 420-horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. This engine can also be found in Dodge's attractive little sports car, the Viper. Full review

Last Friday, the new 2009 Cadillac CTS-V laid down a blistering time at Germany's Nurburgring. Driver John Heinricy completed a lap of the legendary Nordschleife in 7:59.32 which could possibly be the fastest recorded time for a production sedan on factory-spec street tires.

2008 BMW 335i Convertible Review

Now here's a car that everyone envies. The 2008 BMW 335i Convertible. No longer just the soft-cover type of convertible, the BMW 3-Series convertibles come with the hard top cover now. Drivers now have the choice between the two for this awesome automobile.

Fresh out of a drug treatment center this was the first thing my buddy bought. Wanted to show himself off I guess as a new man. Said that with the money he saves from drugs and booze he can pretty much afford anything now ;).

The pleasure of driving the 3-Series convertible stems, no surprise, not only from its convertible nature, but also from its being a BMW, with first-rate chassis dynamics and powertrains. As with other current 3-Series cars - in sedan, coupe, and wagon styles - engines are a pair of 3.0-liter inline sixes, one (328i) naturally-aspirated and the other (335i) with forced induction from twin turbochargers. (And, to be more exact, the wagon comes only in 328 form.) The turbo engine is BMW's first road-going gasoline turbo in decades - the only previous examples were found in the 745i sedan in 1981 and the 2002 Turbo in 1976. Neither of those cars were officially imported to the US. Full review

The Rise of the Hybrid

Hybrids are all the rage now a days. Vehicles that lower the cost of fuel and make people giddy about how they help not only their pocket books, but the environment so they can actually enjoy lounging in their patio furniture rather than having to do so with gas masks on.

This story from Fox News talks about how the hybrid is becoming more common than ever. With record smashing oil prices many are hopeful that the prices will help push more funding towards alternative ways to fuel our automobiles. The video below covers this issue.

Gas Prices Angering Americans

Not a day goes by right now in which you don't talk to at least someone who mentions the price of gas. The expense that Americans face just to get to work causes as much heartache as anything in this struggling economy. With people looking for such things as foreclosure help, it is difficult to see how many can even afford to go to work at the current cost of gasoline. Certainly no one that makes less than $30,000 a year can afford to drive more than a few miles everyday to get to their jobs as it just eats half their paycheck away paying for the gasoline.

Seeing comments like these certainly piss people off:

The $4 mark, compounded by a sagging economy, could be a tipping point that spurs people to make permanent lifestyle changes to reduce dependence on foreign oil and help the environment, says Steve Reich, a program director at the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida.

"This is a more significant shift in behavior than I've seen through other fluctuations in gasoline prices," he says. "People are starting to understand that this resource … is not something to be taken for granted or wasted."

I doubt anyone believes people drive less because they are concerned about supply. They are concerned about being able to afford it. USA today breaks down some numbers today and talks more about these crazy gas prices.

2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 Review

You all know the status of driving a Mercedes into your Hilton Head rental and being a big shot. The reviewer of the Mercedes-Benz C63 had other problems, however. Rolling out of the parking lot, I guess excited to be driving such a great vehicle they got pulled over for speeding...lol

The dire warnings from the PR spokesperson, “Lots of cops are out there waiting for you” are usually not ignored by auto writers when test driving a new model in city, post-rush hour traffic … usually is the operative word.

Not more than two minutes after leaving the parking lot of the hotel, the driver of the vehicle – who must remain nameless -- in which I was the navigator passenger was given a 16 mph over the posted speed of 30 mph ticket for $186. Full Review

2009 Suzuki SX4: Under $16,000 with Standard Navigation Sold in U.S.

When you think of an automobile that has a price tag of just $16,000, you really can't be thinking of features. You are probably thinking that if it is still running 2 years from now, you will be quite satisfied, much less offering features such as standard navigation.

American Suzuki Motor Corp. today announced the addition of a fully integrated standard navigation system to the 2009 Suzuki SX4. The company's offering marks the first time a new vehicle under $16,000 will include navigation as a standard feature. The innovative navigation system will be included as standard equipment on both the four-door SX4 Sport and front-wheel-drive version of the five-door SX4 Crossover, propelling the 2009 SX4 to the front of the compact segment as the personal technology leader.

I guess they finally decided that the technology is so cheap now that they may as well slip it into the package and make it a great seller for themselves. Kind of like how you can upgrade your computer memory by juicing up your ram for cymp change these days. Customers can't be complaining either with the new add on I'm sure.

2009 Audi A3 PReview

The 2009 Audi A3 as you can see might look like a Mercedes to you when you look at that picture. It certainly did to me the first time I took a gander at it. he 2009 Audi A3, offered in the USA exclusively with the five-door body style, raises its sporty profile with a raft of improvements and an accentuated design.

A recent preview of the vehicle is discussed here. The whole theme of the automobile is "sporty" and "elegance". From design to performance the Audi A3 looks to be a great automobile. Even those that haven't found the best acne solutions can look good behind the wheel. Audi is bringing the five-door A3 onto the U.S. market with two different gasoline engines. The 2.0 TFSI has 200 hp, while the 3.2 quattro with its six cylinders musters 250 hp. The Audi AS should be available in the Fall of 2008..

Nitrogen Tire Inflation Saves Gas

People are always looking for deals, or to use the most cost effective way to get things done. Be it by just buying term life insurance over whole life, or finding cheap ways to reduce the amount of gas they use in their cars.

GoNitroTire, a member of environmental advocacy organization Global Green USA, is helping drivers transform their vehicles into safer, cost-effective modes of transportation in time for Earth Day 2008. Previously available only to major industries such as NASCAR and the U.S. Military, GoNitroTire now provides nitrogen tire inflation to consumers and business fleets through advanced technology products UltraFill99+ and TireXtender, available at www.GoNitroTire.com.

“The day has come for Nitrogen Tire Inflation to be embraced in the public domain… tried and tested by large industry and professional motor sports for decades,” said GoNitroTire Founder and Managing Partner Ken Lawton. “It is the best piece of green technology to emerge in many years… Our other Nitrogen products will further revolutionize the way people maintain their tires and for GoNitroTire, simply another platform for growth.”

With gas prices reaching their highest national average cost since 2005, it’s no surprise consumers are looking for an effective way to reduce their dependency on gas. But do they know it’s as easy as changing the type of air that’s in their tires? A recent study by the Ford Motor Company found that the average truck driver saves 8% yearly on gas by injecting nitrogen in their tires, providing extended, even tire wear over time.

Check out the GoNitroTire's website for more in depth information on Nitrogen Tire Inflation uses.

Ethanol: Blame for Food Inflation?

Certainly it plays a part in it. Even the average person has heard about, and probably been directly affected by price increases in food the last few years. How much does Ethanol play in that role?

According to the Wall Street Journal, surging commodity prices have pushed up global food prices 83 percent in the past three years, according to the World Bank - putting huge stress on some of the world's poorest nations allt he while we are promoting it in our Washington and office space Connecticut.

Many policy makers at the weekend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank agreed that the U.S. policies pushing corn-based ethanol and other biofuels as deepening the woes. "When millions of people are going hungry, it's a crime against humanity that food should be diverted to biofuels," said India's finance minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram. (Now THAT's straight talk)

James Connaughton, chairman of the White House's council on environmental quality, said the U.S. is working on developing "second generation" biofuels that would use varieties of grass or agricultural wastes - not food - as source material. "That's where we need to get to go," he said.

150 MPG SUV: XH-150

You have read correctly. This XH-150 is supposed to be a 150 MPG SUV. Clearly something worthy of funny t-shirts as you have to be thinking that this is a joke at this point, but it isn't.

Reporters and editors in Philadelphia are invited to drive the XH-150 150 mpg SUV at Penn Treaty Park along the river on Delaware Avenue at E. Columbia Ave. This will be April 15th. Tax Day.

The XH-150 uses batteries, ultracaps and proprietary power and control electronics to enable an electric-only mode to drive more than 40 miles on a single overnight household charge, can achieve highway speeds up to 87 miles per hour in all electric mode, and is capable of unlimited range in hybrid mode using its gas engine along with its batteries and ultracaps, still with better mileage than comparable gasoline only cars. In addition, contrary to the common image of electric and hybrid vehicles, the XH-150 is also capable of much faster acceleration than comparable gas-only SUVs.

Here is a video of the XH-150:

California clean-vehicle goals may be cut

All those tree huggers that spend more money on luxury watches than you probably do on your food may be in for some bad news.

Samantha Young writing for the AP reported that California air regulators on Thursday were considering a major cutback to the state's clean-vehicle program, a move that would delay a large deployment of battery-powdered and hydrogen vehicles.

The decision also will affect efforts to promote zero-emission vehicles in 12 other states.

Tree huggers unite.

BMW Profits Fall Victim to U.S. Success

Americans helped BMW sell more cars than in any other country, but the very weak dollar made those sales much less profitible than they could ahve been. The USD is being pounded in the world markets over the course of the last year and it showed in the bottom lines for the BMW sales.

Anyone making their sales in the U.S. from the International side has probably cleared their wine racks in the last year as the profits are being pounded by the weak dollar.

There was a surprise in last year's results, though. Audi's profit margin topped BMW's.

BMW's comparatively bad showing demonstrates just how right CEO Norbert Reithofer has been in pursuing drastic cost reductions. In the United States, BMW has become a victim of its own success. The weak dollar most hurts the import company selling the most in the United States.

According to Automotive News, in some ways, Audi should be grateful to Ralph Weyler, its departed sales and marketing chief for neglecting the American market.

Weyler's inattention helped put Audi far behind Mercedes and BMW in U.S. sales. But as an unintended positive result, the dollar's weakness today is barely affecting the company. It makes one wonder if the folks at Audi might be secretly hoping for Americans to buy a record number of BMWs again this year, too.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0-liter Diesel Review

One of the most successful SUV lines ever made, the Cheep Grand Cheorkee tries to get back into the fold with this new breed of SUV. This vehicle is going to have the highest miles per gallon output of any in the Jeep Cherokee line. Something that is a must for SUVs. You may even be able to drive this to your Hilton Head rentals rather than other methods with its new and improved engine.

"Don't judge a book by its cover." You know this adage, and sometimes it even means something…like learning the tattooed girl from Starbucks is a Rhodes Scholar. The old saying applies to the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel, and here's how: The Grand Cherokee last received a full makeover in 2005.

In industry parlance, this SUV is mid-cycle—another way of saying that its middle aged, old news, not worthy of much attention, and completely out of the media limelight. However, when fitted with the 3.0-liter clean diesel V-6 produced by Mercedes-Benz, the Grand Cherokee suddenly becomes a newly-relevant SUV. full review

2009 BMW 1 Series Review

This is one of the cars you look forward to seeing every year. The yuppie power drive and the name to back it up. The convertible with the look to make any woman get a little bit excited under the down comforters in the back seat while you look up at the stars.

BMW’s new 1 Series is a genetic throwback to the first BMWs imported into the US. More curvaceous than the boxy 1600 and 2002 of your misspent youth, the new 1 Series—128 and 135 Coupe and Convertible—are spiritual successors. Powered by engines introduced in the 3 and 5 Series, the lighter cars have more performance in a smaller, and more affordable, package.

Introduced in 2007, the 230 hp N52 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine injects every 128i with 200 pound-feet of torque. The price for a 128i Coupe, including destination, is $29,375 and a 128i Convertible, $33,875. full review

2008 Ford Shelby GT Wins Motor Trend Ponycar War

Shelby and Ford once again proved to be a winning combination when Motor Trend announced the champion of its “Pony Expressed” comparison test in its April 2008 issue.

This car is amazing. I wish I had some video for it to put up, but unfortunately I do not. Maybe in a couple days. Hopefully I remember to do it since I will have a hard enough time remembering to set my Chopard watch a head an hour on Saturday for the Daylight Savings Time change. Spring A Head, Fall Back is the way to remember. Now if there was just a good way to remember the date...lol

“The Shelby GT is a well-balanced, fun to drive machine that draws upon our experience of making Mustangs go faster,” said Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Autos. “Every lesson we learned while earning our stripes over the past 46 years is built into these ponycars. The competition was fierce with three very good cars in this test, so I’m proud that the Ford Shelby GT has earned another victory for both Team Shelby and every Ford Shelby owner.”

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Lancia Delta

Unfortunately most of the video I am posting here is in French, but that isn't a big deal. You don't need to have just unpacked your luggage from a Paris weekend to understand. What you are going to want to do is skip forward to about the 9 minute mark and watch the show. You don't need to speak French to enjoy the footage.

What are we watching here? With great fanfare, Lancia unveiled its stunning new Delta at the 78th Geneva Motor Show. Delta: a name that embodies all the strength of one of the highest moments in automotive history as well as a name that means ‘difference’ in mathematical terms; a difference conceived as evolution, improvement, excellence.

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Saab Hybrid Concept

Yesterday at the Geneva Auto Show, Saab introduced their plans for their hybrid concepts. In the video below you can see their presentation as it was meant to be shared. Not exaclty the company you would work with if you were looking for something to put your Jobox on, but they are leading the industry in turbocharging vehicle performance.

Saab already leads the automotive industry in applying its turbocharging expertise to enhance the performance and environmental benefits of E85 fuel (85% bioethano/15% gasoline). Saab BioPower models are the top-selling flex-fuel vehicles in Europe and produce more power with E85, as well as less CO2 emissions compared to gasoline.

2008 Honda Fit Sport Review

Funny thing about this review is that the guy doing the review, CAREY RUSS, notes that when he finally got the chance to review the vehicle he was informed that the 2009 version would be available in the next couple months. He still felt that the need for the review was there and so do I so I concur by posting about it. Guess they were all out checking into Sea Pines rentals instead of getting the reviewers their info.

Does this mean that the 2008 Fit is a lame duck, unworthy of review?

Hardly. It's still model year 2008, the `09 won't be out for a while, and despite increasing competition the current Fit still is the premium entry in the subcompact sedan/hatchback class. full review

This amazing concept has a solar sun roof that acts as an additional energy source for the vehicle’s power supply, independent of the engine. The energy from the photovoltaic units can be either stored or used immediately. Great for movers New York and anyone on long distance travel.

Danica Patrick Interview

Figured I'd start to put some more racing stuff on here so what better than an interview with Danica Patrick with a nice pic? :P

She looks good in that FHM spread. Showing that she doesn't have much need for Hydroxycut with her tight body.

Q. With the second season with Andretti Green, do you feel a lot more comfortable with the team now since you've been through it once before? DANICA PATRICK (15:00): “I do. This is the most excited I've been going into a season, most comfortable I've felt. This year I feel like excitement is sort of maybe number one to nervousness. Where normally every other year I was more nervous than anything. So I'm really excited about it. Get the whole interview here.

A Look Back at the Rinspeed Senso

A few days ago I posted about the Rinspeed sQuba. An odd car that can drive underwater. Yes. It is true. Go to the link to see it and don't forget to get a medical id if you ever plan on getting one of these oddities.

Now there is an article up at AutoNews.com that has a look back on the Rinspeed Sense complete with video. Too bad that site doesn't do very well with their scraping because they have tons of non-working links in it. So..;.I decided to pull the video over here and let you have a look at this video.
