911 Turbo Flips Its Lid

Porsche's new 911 Turbo Cabriolet will go on sale this September for $136,500, the German sportscar company said today.

The new 2008 model will sport a 480-horsepower, 3.6-liter flat six with turbocharging and 460 pound-feet of torque. Smooth turbo power arrives through unique variable turbo-vane technology, the company promises. And a special Sport Chrono package will drive torque to 505 lb-ft in overboost mode.

All told, the new Turbo Cabrio will execute 0-60 mph runs in 3.8 seconds when manual-equipped; a Tiptronic version drops that time to 3.5 seconds. Both automatic and manual Turbo Cabrios will be capable of 193 mph at the top end.

Among other less readily observed details, Porsche says the new car's weight is only 154 pounds above the standard Turbo Coupe, thanks to lightweight materials. The convertible top will raise or lower itself in 20 seconds and can be deployed at speed of up to 30 mph.
