2009 Frankfort Motor Show: Volkswagon Reveals Zero-emmission concept, E-Up!

Volkswagon has given the spectators at the 2009 Frankfort Motor show something rather intirguing t o take in. A completely new zero-emissions vehicle called the E-Up!, giving viewers reason to feel a bit more comfortable lounging in their patio chairs.

It is powered by an electric motor with the capability of delivering a peak of 81 PS (54 PS constant) and 154 lbs/ft of torque channelling drive through the front wheels, the E-Up! can accelerate to 62 mph in 11.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 84 mph.

The E-Up! weighs just 1,085 kg. This figure includes the lithium-ion batteries powering the vehicle accounting for 240 kg of this total. Pretty amazing weight total considering that the batteries alone account for over 20% of the total weight.

The batteries have a capacity of 18 kWh which allows a theoretical range of over 80 miles. Through the use of proposed public charging stations 80 per cent of the vehicle’s battery capacity can be made available within an hour. Using a 230-volt domestic system would require a charging time of around five hours. This process is aided by a series of solar panels measuring 1.4 square metres mounted on the roof.

On unveiling the E-Up! Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group said: ‘Cars with pure petrol and diesel engines – which in the foreseeable future will continue to be unbeatable for mid- to long-range distances – will be supplemented by cars like the E-Up! in coming years. And that will happen starting in 2013. The concept now being presented in Frankfurt very realistically shows how we envision such a Volkswagen with pure electric drive technology, visually and in terms of size.’

2010 "Green Car of the Year" To Be Announced at La Atuo Show

The "Green Car of the Year" Award was created in 2005 by Green Car Journal, the leading auto environmental magazine, as the demand for more environmentally friendly vehicles started to rise significantly. As the demand grows even more since the award was introduced, it becomes an even more prestigious honor. Whether you are traveling a crossed the country in, or back and forth to work daily you have a pretty good idea about how the effect of fuel on the pocket book has been hitting everyone. In that mindset the interest around this award, and even the vehicles up for it become of interest.

The selection process can bee seen in detail through the link, but the short answer is that they select 5 finalists based on driving experience, and their research into current models running on conventional and alternative fuels are eligible for consideration of the award.

L.A. Auto Show: BMW to Show Alternative Fuel Cars

While many of you will be leaving the comforts of your leather home theater seating to visit the show I thought I would post some highlights from a recent interview of Ian Robertson, New Chairman and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motorcars and member of the BMW AG board of management in charge of sales and marketing. In which he discusses a bit about what is in store for the LA Auto Show in regards to BMW.

AIADA: Last year BMW introduced its hydrogen vehicle. What are other fuel options are being explored?

IR: If you look at all the fuel alternatives that are available, there are many under development that have not actually seen the light of day yet. I hear people say ‘Is it going to be a hybrid, is it going to be an all electric car, is it going to be one that runs on some other fuel?’ The answer is, this industry has been around for over 100 years and we are extremely good at developing technologies due to circumstances. Over the next two years we will see lots of technologies starting to appear.

AIADA: How is BMW proceeding with the various options?

IR: As a technological leader, BMW has a number of ideas but we are not putting all our focus on one technology. We have multiple ideas that are coming through. Some of them will be more successful than others, I am sure.

AIADA: When will this new technology be shown? At the Paris Auto Show?

IR: You will have to wait to see what we show in Paris, but one thing is for certain: you will see in LA some alternative fuel vehicles that will come to market.

AIADA: Thanks Ian, see you in LA. Full interview

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Lancia Delta

Unfortunately most of the video I am posting here is in French, but that isn't a big deal. You don't need to have just unpacked your luggage from a Paris weekend to understand. What you are going to want to do is skip forward to about the 9 minute mark and watch the show. You don't need to speak French to enjoy the footage.

What are we watching here? With great fanfare, Lancia unveiled its stunning new Delta at the 78th Geneva Motor Show. Delta: a name that embodies all the strength of one of the highest moments in automotive history as well as a name that means ‘difference’ in mathematical terms; a difference conceived as evolution, improvement, excellence.

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Saab Hybrid Concept

Yesterday at the Geneva Auto Show, Saab introduced their plans for their hybrid concepts. In the video below you can see their presentation as it was meant to be shared. Not exaclty the company you would work with if you were looking for something to put your Jobox on, but they are leading the industry in turbocharging vehicle performance.

Saab already leads the automotive industry in applying its turbocharging expertise to enhance the performance and environmental benefits of E85 fuel (85% bioethano/15% gasoline). Saab BioPower models are the top-selling flex-fuel vehicles in Europe and produce more power with E85, as well as less CO2 emissions compared to gasoline.

2008 Geneva Motor Show: World Debut of Rinspeed sQuba, First Underwater Car

This company called Rinspeed makes some pretty amazing concept cars. This one actually drives underwater! Called the sQuba for obvious reasons the car is based on a car driven by Roger Moore in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me” in 1977 when he dove below the waves in a sleek vehicle that moments before seemed to be an ordinary car. The only problem: The scene never really took place; it was an animation.

With the “sQuba,” the world’s first real submersible car, the movie fake now becomes reality for visitors of the Geneva Motor Show (March 6th - 16th, 2008). Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht (52) is known for his extraordinary automotive creations. The acknowledged James Bond enthusiast and Swiss automobile visionary kept revisiting this scene in his mind over and over: “For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water. Now we have made this dream come true.” Definetely going to require some Sports Authority coupons for this trip.

Take a look at this amazing video:

If you watched the best Super Bowl in years last night you probably saw quite a few ads for new hybrids. Not just hybrids, but hybrid SUVs that are going to drain your checking account up front in hopes youa re going to save money long-term on fuel. In fact the game MVP, Eli Manning was given a Tahoe Hybrid I believe for winning the award.

2008 Detroit Auto Show: 'Did You Know that Cars Are the Most Recycled Product in America?'

Just getting back from Branson Missouri and settling in Detroit once again it is time to talk ab it about the Detroit Auto Show. One of the more interesting articles I have seen out there so far was this one about Automobile Recycling. It states that the most recycled product in America is the car.

The VRP Automotive Recycling Exhibit centers on the theme of "Did you know?" From that theme, scientists and engineers from Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation -- which comprise the VRP -- are delivering an impressive environmental message that is based on 16 years of collaborative efforts to increase the recyclability of automobiles and reduce their impact on the environment.

2007 Eyes on Design Auto Show Fathers Day Weekend

Detroit is the King of auto shows and no other holiday is better to get father and son together than Father's Day. The Eyes On Design car show is a Father's Day event and has been for the last 20 years. Various folding tables and booths set in front of some sick looking vehicles and this year should be no different. Perfect Father's Day present to bond the father and son this year if you have a chance to go.

“Aerodynamics and Streamlining – By Design” is the theme for the 20th Eyes On Design car show, a Father’s Day tradition for this reporter. The family functions always have to go on without me until I get back home in early afternoon after I spend the day with one of the best, most eclectic car shows of the summer season here in Southeast Michigan. I always get there in the early light as they bring the great cars onto the huge front lawn of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford mansion on Jefferson Avenue just south of 9-Mile Road on the shore of Lake St. Clair. full article

Crowds flock to auto show

Just wanted to get something out there on the North American International Auto Show. This article has many links and great coverage on the site with tons of pics and plenty to read about what's under the hoods of these fantastic rides.

Velvet S. McNeil / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Slick roads and pinched pocketbooks didn’t keep auto aficionados away from the North American International Auto Show on Sunday, the second day the show was open to the public.

Car enthusiasts young and old ogled, photographed and handled automobiles displayed on the floor of Cobo Center. Some hunted for their next family car; many cruised the floor for their dream wheels.

“Nothing would have kept me away today,” said Keith Simmons, 47, who drove an hour from Toledo in the rain to attend. With camcorder in hand, he recorded his fantasy cars from all angles, like a sporty BMW and the Rolls-Royce Phantom convertible, a concept car with dramatic suicide doors.

New Viper raises the horsepower bar

Unbelievable.

DETROIT -- Dodge renews its claim to the all-American horsepower trophy with the 2008 Viper SRT10 sports car, which cranks out a whopping 600 hp, 90 more hp than the Viper it replaces.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 had held the horsepower crown with 505 hp.

The Viper's output comes from an aluminum V-10 engine. Chrysler group engineers worked with specialists from McLaren Performance Technologies and Ricardo Inc. to increase the horsepower by upping displacement, adding electronically adjusted variable valve timing, and raising the rpm limit.
